American's confusing "20 partners" promo has 4 people gathering in my kitchen trying to figure out if we should have faith that "any company offering...mileage" means that or if it means only those on AA's "Complete List of Partners" at their site. Their list omits giftcertificates.com, Hickory Farms, points.com and many others at aolaadvantage.com. We don't think we can do it from only that list. When I called AA customer service, the girl told me only those on the list count: "If we counted just any partner, then anyone could qualify." (exact quote) So, where is Randy Petersen or anyone else who has reason to believe that we can get that 20,000 bonus without staying at 15 hotels? While my interpretation is similar to Beckles the rules on the AA web site also state that the link provides a "complete" set of partners. So the rules are conflicting.
No, Chase, definitely not! That's the one point on which we do have perfect clarification: dining for miles counts as only one partner, no matter how many restaurants you visit.
I've been wondering whether AAdvantage Dining is considered one partner, or are the individual restaurants each considered a partner. It would seem pretty easy to visit 20 different restaurants during the promotion period even if you don't fly.
I think AA is setting itself up for a PR nightmare if they only accept the "complete list". Here is the text of the promo from the AA website:
Use 20 different AAdvantage partners during the five-month promotional period and receive a bonus of 20,000 miles! Click on Partners for a complete list of AAdvantage partners. AAdvantage partner mileage transactions include posted mileage from any company offering AAdvantage mileage. To be eligible, member must earn miles from 20 different AAdvantage partners; multiple mileage transactions or postings with the same AAdvantage Partner during the promotional period will qualify as one transaction. When earning AAdvantage miles on an airline AAdvantage partner, including codeshare flights, the airline that appears on your ticket for that flight segment will be considered the applicable AAdvantage partner for purposes of meeting the 20 partner requirement. All mileage earned from either AOL Quick Check Out or AOL Opinion Place counts as one transaction and one AAdvantage partner. Bonus mileage does not apply to this promotion. All transactions must be completed by September 30, 2001, and any AAdvantage mile (mail in) certificates must be post marked by October 31, 2001 to count as an eligible promotion transaction. Allow eight weeks after posting of last eligible activity for posting of bonus miles.
It clearly says any partner, and not just those on the list.
I seem to recall hearing at one point that AA publishes (or maybe they used to) a book of all their partners. I'm pretty sure they have more partners than anyone.
My strategy is to get as many partners as I can. I certainly would not recommend shooting for 20 ... I'm going for 25 minimum to be on the safe side, but that includes everything, including Points.com, Orvis, and eHobbies to name a few I've already used that are not on the list.
I really think it is cheaper to buy an airline ticket than chase after these 20,000 miles (unless you travel for business and will be staying in that many hotels and renting cars, etc)!

at the beginning, they also said Air Canada was a partener and they changed it! If they can change things after the promotion started, they might make other changes. At least Northwest "grandfathered" people in when they made a change. With this there is no signing up to accept "rules" at a certain point.
In the meantime, I wrote to Tom Thumb about the 500 miles minimum (before they will transfer miles to AA). There is no way around it and they don't know what proof AA will want to show that we may have shopped there without spending the 500.00 minimum.

I don't know that we have clarificaton on anything with this promotion.
Thanks, Beckles, for your insight. I've used Hickory Farms, giftcertificates.com and points.com--three that aren't on their list. So far, I have ten--if they all count--and have spent only $65.00, except for my credit card, of course. But, I'm afraid all those "partners" at aolaadvantage count as only one partner--or else I just got an unknowledgeable service rep on the phone. Plus, for those of us who already signed up for "Quick Checkout" ages ago, do you get points for using it? The phone rep said, "Yes," but I had a strange feeling that everything she was telling me was wrong. She didn't even know what I meant by the "20 partners" promotion at first.
