    Last night I "purchased" a travel award for an air ticket from DFW-CMH (Columbus, OH) in December using aa.com. I was very impressed.
    At first I was sceptical because after selecting my flights I had to click the Continue button. This made me a little nervous because I thought that there was no backing out now. Perhaps the flights that I'd selected did not have S (or is it T?) inventory and I was going to be bumped to another flight on that day? Perhaps there were no more 25K awards available and I would be billed 50K miles?
    Anyway, plenty of wiggle room and "exit without completing transaction" exits along the way.
    A+++ for American. I always wondered why it was that one had to go through the AAdvantage desk for a transaction that is no more complicated than a normal ticket purchase.

    I purchased a cheap ticket for the DCA-ORD-LHR rt (upgraded to C with a eVIP) Im always impressed by the service level on QF and this was no exception.

    The instructions were that you had to have more than 25,000 miles in your account before you could start the process. After the transaction the website still said on the top that "you have 91,454 miles" (or whatever my miles balance was before I started). My confirmation e-mail was timed at 11:15pm on Oct 20th. Today my miles statement had an entry dated Oct 21st taking the 25K miles out of my account.

    My confirmation e-mail showed my seat assignments but I don't remember being asked to choose seats during the process.

    I'm not sure why I wanted to be able to "opt out" during the process. It is not likely that my business associate for the trip would call me at 11:10pm on a Saturday night to talk about a date change.
    Website also had a nice page called Know the Rules which listed all the rules concerning the AAdvantage Award.

  • Am glad that this option is finally offered online! Do they hold your seat until the last day that 'award ticketing' must occur without expedite penalty -- or do the miles come out of your AAdvantage account right away?

  • I'm surprised that you can't book first class, or AAnytime awards.

    Pretty weak effort, IMHO (but better than nothing).

    The procedure starts off with you verifying that you are indeed you. So for me it had Mark ... with rest of name and full address. I'm pretty sure that the transaction was set up for booking a ticket for the account holder only. With a normal ticket purchase you really only verify yourself towards the end around payment time.
    Since the ticket was for my own travel I didn't really look to see if there was the chance to book a ticket for someone else.
