Hilton Orlando/Altamonte Springs - FlyerTalk Forums:: I replied that the card indicated that the rate was the max for the entire year, Ive never seen a hotel that doesnt have a rack rate thats like double of what http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=454114HOME | I have had the MBNA Aeroplan card issued in the US for a couple of years. It is a typical frequent flyer card, one mile per (US) dollar, annual fee, some interest rate that I don't care about because I don't carry a balance.
Since MBNA merged with Bank of America, they have instituted an obnoxious 3% foreign transaction surcharge on all purchases outside the US, including those in Canada. That makes the card useless in Canada, since 3% is way more than the value of the miles.
So what should I do? I realize I could switch to a generic card that buys tickets, but I actually like the AP miles since I find that (evidently unlike everyone else) I cash in 60K mile rewards for family trips to Europe. Is there a card available in the US that can transfer miles to AP and doesn't charge 3% if I use it in Canada? That discussion is somewhat out of date. MBNA was fine until they merged into Bank of America. Now they charge 3%. I got a Capital One card that has no foreign surcharge and offers cash back, which is OK, but it'd be nice if there were a way to top up my points at reasonable cost.
