  • Buttony, Liver cancer touched my family in the past, so I wanted to see what I could find for you in addition to the excellent information from Researcher7. Perhaps you can review some of the sites below and select one or more to send an email requesting information or a referral to a specialist. Cancer BacUp is the most promising site I located. You can fill out an online form requesting information personalized to your situation. Cancer BacUp (UK Cancer Info Service) Home Page: http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/ Personalized Information: http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/search/personalised.htm I also located some cancer sites specific to Scotland. South East Scotland Cancer Network (SCAN) http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/genisys/scan/index.html Scotland's Health on the Web Links http://www.show.scot.nhs.uk/AZ.asp#S Cancer in Scotland (Click “contacts” button at lower left) http://www.show.scot.nhs.uk/sehd/cancerinscotland/ Next are general UK cancer sites. Cancer Research UK Home Page: http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk List of Research Institutes & Clinical Centers http://science.cancerresearchuk.org/institutes/?version=1 General Cancer Organizations from Cancer Research UK http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=193 Institute of Cancer Research http://www.icr.ac.uk/cancerinformation.html British Association for Cancer Research http://www.icr.ac.uk/bacr/Links.htm University of Newcastle Cancer Research Unit http://www.ncl.ac.uk/cancer.research/ Now here are some sites related to liver cancer. Liver Cancer Network Resources http://www.livercancer.com/resources/index.html Liver Tumor Resources http://www.livertumor.org/resources.asp American Liver Foundation Online Contact Form (Perhaps if all else fails they can refer you to experts in your area) http://www.liverfoundation.org/contactus.shtml And last, below is a site in the US which helps to link patients with expert second opinions. According to the site, biopsies from patients in other countries are accepted. Find Cancer Experts http://www.findcancerexperts.com/request.experts.html Search Strategy: I went to LiverCancer.com and from there followed links to other sites. Warmest regards, fsw

  • Position is that the diagnosis of cancer of the liver - untreatabloe - is suspect and a second opinion is sought. Only the top oncologists - experts in liver cancer - will confirm ...or offer hope. League tables if you like, but experts they must be. Thank you

  • It seems willie-ga has answered the question but can you help with clarification of your first response ? "Position is that the diagnosis of cancer of the liver - untreatabloe - is suspect and a second opinion is sought. Only the top oncologists - experts in liver cancer - will confirm ...or offer hope. League tables if you like, but experts they must be. Thank you" Do you mean the diagnosis is suspect or that the opinion that it is "untreatable" is suspect? Perhaps you mean "inoperable". There are treatments both conventional and alternative for inoperable liver cancers. • Hello, and thanks for the question. I'm based in Scotland, and used to work in the Scottish Health Service, so I had a fair idea where to look for the right resources. fsw-ga below has run down almost all the info you need below. I can add three names: Anna Gregor and John Dewar are two of the top oncologists in Scotland. Dr Anna Gregor Department of Clinical Oncology Western General Hospital Crewe Road Edinburgh EH4 2XU E-mail: Anna.Gregor@scotland.gsi.gov.uk Contact through Liz Porterfield: 0131 244 2352 Dr John Dewar Consultant Radiotherapist and Oncologist Department of Radiotherapy Ninewells Hospital Dundee DD1 9SY Tel: 01382 632390 Fax: 01382 632885 E-mail: johnad@tuht.scot.nhs.uk Harry Burns is the top cancer consultant in Scotland for ALL cancers. Dr Harry Burns Director of Public Health and Lead Cancer Clinician for Scotland Greater Glasgow Health Board Dalian House PO Box 15327 350 St. Vincent Street Glasgow G2 8YZ Tel: 0141 201 4602 Fax: 0141 201 4601 ..o0o.. Consultants can be tricky people to get hold of, and will often initially turn away calls from patients to avoid conflict with your own doctor. Another way "in" is to go through a Cancer Support Group. Tak Tent is a large support group for Scottish-based cancer sufferers, and provide information, support, education and care for cancer patients, families, friends and professionals. They have a network of support groups throughout Scotland. They run a Drop-in Resource and Information Centre at the following address, and you can email or ring with your problem, and they'll try to find the right people for you to talk to. ( http://www.taktent.org.uk ) Tak Tent Cancer Support - Scotland Flat 5, 30 Shelly Court, Gartnavel Complex, Glasgow G12 0YN Tel: 0141 211 0122 Email: tak.tent@care4free.net ..o0o.. The Scottish Liver Transplant Unit (http://www.show.scot.nhs.uk/sltu/clinical.htm ) offers a free advice help line where you could discuss your case, and be pointed in the appropriate direction. They say: "Advice for Patients: Medical, surgical and anaesthetists advice for patients with liver disease available 24 hours a day." Telephone: 0131 536 3776 Scottish Liver Transplant Unit Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh Lauriston Place Edinburgh EH3 9YW ..o0o.. If you don’t get any joy from any of the above, the "British Liver Trust" is a registered charity that offers advice on all liver related diseases and will help you out either themselves, or by getting you access to the right resources. ( www.britishlivertrust.org.uk/ ) Contact them at: British Liver Trust Central House Central Avenue Ransomes Europark Ipswich IP3 9QG Office Tel: 01473 276326 Fax: 01473 276327 E-mail: info@liver-t.demon.co.uk They say: "We have a telephone helpline on 01473 276328, for medical enquiries and information. This free, confidential information service is staffed by qualified personnel who answer enquiries by telephone or letter on all aspects of liver disease and its treatment. " ..o0o.. The other place to try is CancerBACUP, the UK's leading cancer information service (http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk/ ) FREEPHONE HELPLINE: 0808 800 1234. Hope you get what you’re looking for. • Can I ask what you are really looking for? I can probably provide you with a list of contact details of hepatic and oncology clinics at Scottish hospitals. Would that be enough? Or are you looking for some kind of "league table" of Scottish consultants specialising in hepatic cancers? willie-ga (in Scotland)

  • The warmth and understanding of the replies was extremely comforting. Thank you.

  • One of the major hospitals for liver disease in the US is the Harvard Medical School-affliated Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Ma. They have a world class liver transplant team. If you are asking abou liver transplants in Scotland, you might seek a referral from the Lahey clinic, because they're in an excellent position to make such a referral. Their website is: http://www.lahey.org If the central issue of your inquiry is liver cancer and it's treatment by an oncologist, that is an issue which is distinct from a liver tranplant, since liver cancer treatment may involve therapies distinct from transplantation. I am in the Boston area and I am very knowledgable about cancer therapeutics from a research perspective. May I suggest that you contact the following in the US for possible referrals for cancer therapy, besides the link added above for Lahey Clinic? I would suggest the following and they may be found on the internet: Mayo Clinic: Minnesota Dana Farber: Boston, Ma Sloan Kettering: NY, NY With this battery of weblinks to the very best of US medicine, I feel confident that you'll receive several excellent referrals to Hospitals in Scotland. My best to you!
