I know that there is a thread on tips and whatnot but I thought this would be a good place for reviews since i always like to read other bigsoccer users opinions on games.

so here is my take on fifa 2003:

-best graphics ever in a soccer game
    - easily best version of the fifa series
    - it still sucks

yeah, I still don't like it. the camera angles suck. the ball still moves way to fast, I mean you lightly tap a shot and it becomes a blast from 25 yards out. There is a lot to like in this game, and I am not a FIFA hater but still I found this game to be a waste of money. I was looking forward to this game too.

back to playing MLS extra time 2002 for me.

Wow, this is a sad indictment of the game! Actually, I like it alot, notwithstanding. I was a bit disappointed with the graphics at first, but then I realized that they were set by default to a crappy screen resolution setting (you can increase the detail, etc. by resetting the screen resolution).

The gameplay has really improved and is much more realistic. My gripe: you have to re-learn to use the controller--apart from using the d-pad, your left hand really serves no purpose. Not sure if the "Freesyle" control is any good; sometimes, I could dribble past defenders; other times, I was tackled off the ball.

The chants and supporters sections and stadia are awesome; I wish I had the opportunity to set all the matches to NIGHT as opposed to the Day--it's much better resolution/hence, easier game play. The flares in the crowd are pretty cool, too. I wish you can fine-tune the camera settings, like you could in previous years.

Still, I think I'm going to enjoy playing this game more so than other versions (I've got all of the FIFA series starting with FIFA '99).

I don't think it's made by EA canada, but I'm not sure. Most EA sports games are flawed in someway. I am sure fifa 2003 has more than 200 teams. You can download creation center for the PC (but i heard it sucks) and FIFA 2003 does have a lot of extra feature. The reason many dislike fifa 2003 is because of the gameplay, and I don't think it has anything to do with EA canada.

Is it possible that the CD can only hold so much information and if they add new features they have to take away some old ones (like the creative center, etc..)? And maybe that's why they did not increase the # of leagues in the game.

I haven't played it yet, but, Pope a 49?? You have got to be kidding me...What is Sanneh??

  • Definitely the best FIFA I've played. I had the '99 version, but I was using an N64 back then (stayed with it for Goldeneye and Perfect Dark), so I have no real way of comparing it to a true sports console. I'm not enamored enough of MLS to buy MLS e************************ -I want as many clubs as I can get on the games I pay for.

Presentation- The player movement and tackling remind me of MLS for the PS2 -I guess that was 2001, as there's no version for 2002. I like the highlights at the end of the half and game. I have no problem with the camera choices, as Tele's the only one I use when I play. Tele cam doesn't give you the real TV presentation, but if you want the best field vision, that's the way to go. The stadia look great, but there isn't enough movement in the crowd. The players all seem to be scrunching their necks in. The uniforms look great. The nets could use some realism -they look a bit glossy. I haven't played enough clubs to comment on the variety in chants and songs. The commentary is fine, if somewhat dull. I like the ability to decide between home and away uniforms, but I miss the kit and player creation mode (I really don't care about any one club, so I've always created my own clubs, and even players sometimes). I also miss the ability to choose the game time and weather conditions. That sucks bigtime. My biggest complaint is the lack of zoom and pan in instant replay. There's no excuse for this. I'd also like to be able to save great goals. Goal celebrations need to be much, much longer, and with lots and lots of variation. I loved the way the players' emotions reflected the score in RTWC '98. This game needs optional Spanish commentary, just for the "world" feel. Could also use some classic stadia, like Maracana and possibly Wembley.

Gameplay- The best of the FIFA series by far. The special moves aren't controlled by buttons anymore, but I'm convinced the right stick can duplicate enough moves for a good sim once I become familiar with it. The ball speed is more realistic in the slowest mode, which is the one to use anyway. The tackles remind me of the PS2 version of MLS 2001.

I watched two matches before I played the game myself. Brasil defeated Germany 2-1 GG in the first match, and then -unbelievably- the Galaxy defeated Real Madrid 5-4 (3-0 PK). I played these teams against each other because I wanted to see a lot of goals. Well, I got them, but not like I expected. My first game as a player was as Argentina (I'll use Brasil once I've gotten good enough to beat equal teams on semi-pro. I'm not worthy yet), winning 3-2 over Australia. Once I sign off, I'm going to play as the USA against Portugal.

All in all, a nicely done and much improved game. I'll be buying WTS 2003 and WE6 as soon as they come out, though, and I expect both to be better.

  • how's player's motivations (no motivation), ability measure (only 1-7), formations (can't make your own), and tactics( 3 for offense and 3 for defense and that's it)? did ea ever tried to improve those? how about the number of fouls and randomness of giving cards (virtually no fouls are done by the computer opponents in the past fifa series)?

  • Definately the best of the FIFA series. Gameplay is way better than it has ever been in this series, and the graphics and atmosphere are vastly improved as well; you can now choose specific kits as well for both home and away sides, which eliminates stuff like the annoyong NE-SJ identi-kit games whether played home or away. I really enjoy the new stadiums as well.

But yeah, it's still just not quite there, I agree. The gameplay is kind of choppy and still not terribly realistic, though they did fix free kicks which were utterly impossible with 2002. I also hate the fact that they got rid of the creation center, which became the only reason I continued playing FIFA 2002. Perhaps I'm just a geek, but I had the whole of English D1 and 2 going at one point. :)

Also, still no Mexican or Japanese league, and the Dutch league doesen't exist again, while the Austrian and Korean leagues do...

  • I've got a lot of beefs with this game as well.

-The US and MLS players aren't represented correctly. Pope 49, Ruiz 52 while Agoos has 79 and Jason Kries is on the US team. If you play a season, the game correctly goes into golden goal, but in the playoffs if no goal is scored it goes into PK's. They didnt get the first-to-five right??

-Tournament Modes are not as customizable like before. Now you cant set up a 32 team Champions League Format like you once could.

-Crosses are useless as someone mentioned already. Either is a wormburner into the box or you sky it into the third deck.

    -No saving goals :(

-No nutmegs, step over dribbles, intentional dives, ball shielding etc..the only way to really shake a defender is by frantically "wiggling" (for lack of better word) the D-pad. If a player did that in real match hed fall down of dizziness...

-No IGM as mentionmed before. No offside traps or formation changes on the fly

-No Mexican or Dutch Leagues. No Boca or River Plate

    -Referees almsot non existant..

-If you play the "international cup" you often get 3 Euro teams in the same group. or Mexico and the US. You cant setup a real WC and the groupings they give you are unrealistic For example, the first time I ran through it, it was

    Group X
    USA
    Greece
    Senegal
    Saudi Arabia

    Group Y
    England
    France
    Italy
    Brazil

-the farther you progress into the season, the faster the game becomes. It got to the point where i had to set the option down to "Slow" for game speed because it was so unbelievably fast...

    Good things:

    -Graphics are quick and incredible.

    -I like the camera angles

    -kits are accurates

not to much on the good side

    My suggestions:

-bring back the controls, tournament set up, and IGM, from FIFA '99...

-defenders should be able to do some type of shirt-tugging. Give them another way of keeping track of the offense.

-Fouls only whistled when its an extreme hack. I'd like to see more fouls called with more opportunities for FK.

-referees a little more involved. They can license the players, why not the Referees? I'd like to see Collina, or Frisk or Brian Hall romaing the field, with their actual game managemnet traits shown..

  • Auria, I have no idea why Holland is never in the game, but I wished they were.

I agree, the teams should have been rated more on their World Cup results. Portugal, going out in the first round, are rated as high as anyone else in the game, yet the USA - 8th in the WC - are just average?

If you want to practice freekicks do what I do and play yourself. Set the halves to 45 minutes, play with two controllers as both teams and just have one team keep fouling the other team wherever you want a kick.

I miss the pan too! I scored one of the most beautiful goals I've ever seen, 5 one touch through passes and a one time shot in the upper 90 and the replay sucked.

Does anyone know what winning stuff unlocks yet? I'm anxious to find out but I've been too busy trying to get 100% on GTA:VC to win anything. =D

Pope is actually 42, and Sanneh is...get ready for this...84. Overall though it must be said that the USA National Team as a whole is rated MUCh higher than in FIFA 2002...but without a creation centre where you can modify players, in the end its worse, because even though Sanneh and O'Brien in particular are rated very high, you can't go in and fix Pope's 42.

I've been playing this game for a couple of days, and I quite like the gameplay overall now, especially the way the ball acts. They paid attention to physics this time around. There are definately some issues I've come to not like...corner kicks are impossible, and headers in general are very difficult. It is possible to head the ball in a controlled manner, but I havent figured out how to do it consistantly. More often the player chests the ball down, which I suppose isn't that big a deal...I've scored some chested goals that until you looked at the replay, you'd have thought they were headed in. Free kicks are much easier in this version than last, which is not to say they're at ALL easy even now.

There's also this very annoying and, I'm sure, entirely unintentional bug...if you just stand still with the ball, the other team stands still as well, for a good 15-20 seconds, which depending on the length of your game, can really waste some serious time.

  • It would of been real cool if EA used the PS2 network adapter to download rosters, leagues, patches and uniforms. Maybe next year I guess.

None. There's Austria, Belgium. Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, MLS, Norway, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Which I'm pretty sure is the same lineup from 2002.

It should be pointed out that the PC version apparently does have a creation center patch. Too bad I didn't know that before buying the PS2 version.

I noticed this. I was thinking that you have to win something to unlock Ronaldo and Kahn, but that wouldn't make sense. Why the hell isn't Ronaldo playing for Brasil? Why isn't Japan (a W/C co-host, for Pete's sake) in the game? Do you know anything about why Holland and their league keep getting left out of these games?

Friedel just looks like Keller, and Keller's stats suck, as do Pope's. JOB is rated an 87, which is where Roberto Carlos and other bad asses like him are! Mexico is still rated better than us. Hell, Turkey is rated as high as you can go but somehow the U.S. is still just a fairly good team?

A few months ago, a poster addressed the issue of the USA's poor ratings on games by saying that the USA played well as a team, but did not have great individual talent. I think that's true. It's time for game developers to stop rating teams only by using the average of the players' individual skills. They should add to that average a separate attribute (we'll call it "intangibles") to teams, which would measure their ability to win, period. Spain and Portugal, for all their great players, have no business with as high a team rating as they do. They've won nothing outside their continent.

The fact that the ball doesn't go with you is really confusing.

I think this is deliberate, and I have no problem with it. The ball doesn't stick to your feet in reall soccer. Players lose control sometmes when challenged. What bothers me is when my keeper comes out on corners and doesn't get the ball (yeah, Marcos is no great keeper, but still...).

You pretty much can't dribble defenders even on semi-pro. If you get past them you had better just shoot because even on a dead sprint if Owen has the ball Agoos will outrun him.

I'm going to withhold judgement on this until I've played a bit longer. I'm thinking it can be done -just not all the time, not by every player, and not against the best defeders most of the time.

You're right about the speed, tho. No way should Owen get walked down by Agoos.

There's also no practice mode, which means you take free kicks and penalties cold, in game situatons only. I've taken four free kicks (failed to score on any of them), and no penalties.

The lack of zoom and pan in replay is beginning to really bother me. I've scored some truly gorgeous goals, and would like to see them from all angles.

The graphics are just amazing, even though the only guy on the U.S. who even looks like himself is Donovan, and somewhat Reyna. Friedel just looks like Keller, and Keller's stats suck, as do Pope's. JOB is rated an 87, which is where Roberto Carlos and other bad asses like him are! Mexico is still rated better than us. • Do the Dutch want an arm and a leg for their damn license or something? I'd like to use a Euroteam once in a while in international friendlies, but they're really the only one I'd consider.

  • More on gameplay, after a few more matches:

-No on the fly formation changes. I should not have to pause the game to change my formation and throw players forward or keep them back. Bad decision leaving out this all-important feature. Someone posted that whenever EA adds something, they remove something as well. IGM and instant replay zoom/pan should have been retained for this game.

-Keeper charges. Whoever posted that the keeper seems to come out on his own is right.

-Crosses from the wings are nearly pointless. My players can cross, but as often as not, no one makes the run into the box, and the cross either bounces harmlessly to the other sideline or is collected by the keeper.

-Opponent formation doesn't seem to adjust to compensate for having a player sent off. This is a no-brainer. I was up 2-0 when one of the defenders was red carded. It seemed that instead of spreading the remaining defenders or even changing the formation to cover the space, the AI left a hole (that I was able to exploit for five more goals). I'm still playing on semi-pro, but that should only affect athletic AI- not tactics.

-I should be able to punch the ball out when I choose, not when my AI decides to do it. And no opposing keeper should be able to punch a moderately paced cross 3/4 of the way to the midfield stripe on a frozen rope. That's not realistic.

All that said, I still love this game. I'll wait for WE6 and WTS 2003 to see if they're any better.

  • The K-League is new, methinks.

  • Thanks guys. I appreciate your reviews. I've been trying to make up my mind on whether I should purchase this game or not.

The fact that there is no creation center in FIFA 2003 makes it almost useless for me. MLS rosters are likely to change a great deal before the start of the season. A lot of the fun that I had with FIFA 2001 and 2002 was after the Super Draft was over I could create versions of the players drafted. Then a couple of weeks into the season I could tweak these guys stats. Geeky? Sure, but fun nonetheless and gave the game good replay value.

I'm not a FIFA hater, but I do prefer Konami's gameplay. Thanks for your insights on the latest FIFA's gameplay. I will skip this year's version, keep playing MLS Extra Time 2002, and hope against hope for a new version of Winning Eleven that includes the MLS license and has a fully integrated creation function!
