Just wondering when we can expect to see the Fox Soccer Channel start to broacast matches in HD? I would suspect that they could do MLS matches (although HDNet might have something to say about that) and next season possibly broacast the EPL in HD.
I agree, I think you'll see some partnerships like Comcast/INHD, FSC/HDNet, and Gol TV/WorldSport. However I did a search on yahoo.com and found that FSC is interested in HD but first they need to know those rights are available.http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/3401236
I think the Euros are on a different standard. Someone else with more HD knowledge should jump in here.
Yes, somewhat similar to the NTSC/PAL schism, there is a similar discrepancy between European and North American HDTV standards. I don't have all the details but I remember reading articles about both the production of the Euro2004 and Olympics in Greece having to be converted to the new format for broadcast here in the States.
The good news is that there is some pretty awesome processors out there for doing this with practically no quality loss in the feed.
Let's hope the networks don't do something stupid with the World Cup like they did with the Olympics. The summer olympics from Greece this year had their HD feed tape delayed by 24 hours...the reason...the local affiliates were afraid their Nielsen ratings would suffer because Nielsen doesn't track HD channels in their ratings surveys.
Certainly ABC/ESPN will have the infrastructure to broadcast all of the games in HD and certainly there will be a feed from the stadiums. Less just hope they have the common sense to use them. I would expect all of WC2006 and, with any luck, EPL matches before too long. Sky has plans to start in 2006. Whether Fox follows suit is anyone's guess. That was ridicolous. Especially considering that they had advertised "the first Olympics in HD," even going so far as to do a joint advertisement with Panasonics' HD TV's. I doubt it will happen in the world cup, since the bulk of Olympic HD programming was stuff not seen on the regular programming, they had qualifying and other inane things. I doubt they could really do that for the World Cup, since it isn't as expansive.
I doubt they'll do HD for MLS since HDNet probably has rights concerning that. I could see it for the EPL once Sky gets HD.

From what I've been reading on the avsforums, it's been agreed for awhile that every World Cup match will be filmed with multiple cameras (20 for each game, as opposed to the few at WC2002) and then downconverted. I'd be very surprised if ESPN, ABC and the Spanish Language channels (which all have HD/Digital stations) didn't pick up at least some matches. I suppose it all comes down to rights though.

Of course, this doesn't solve the problem of rights/transmission but there will be a feed out there. It's just up to Rupert (FSC and the Prem) and ABC/ESPN/Telemundo, etc. (WC 2006) whether we'll get to see any of it in HD in the US. I'm hopeful that we'll get to see a fair amount of the WC - they've already got the rights and the ability to transmit it, plus ESPN2 HD will be well established by then - and have no idea about the Prem.
As for NBC and the Olympics, it's also heavily rumoured that the Winter Olympics will be ALL HD and all in realtime:

there are NOT certianly HD feeds coming from each stadium. HD broadcasts use different cameras that are more expensive. they require MUCH more satellite bandwidth and that adds to the cost.
and i would find it EXTREMELY hard to believe that FSC does not know that HD rights are available. they simply don;t think they are worth spending money on.

The most likely scenario is like what is happening tomorrow for the USA v. Honduras game. FSC and HDNet are partnering to show the game in both HD and SD for their respective viewers. The production will most likely be done by HDNet and FSC will show a downconverted feed from HDNet. Not sure if FSC will use their own crew or the HDNet one.
This is what they did last year for the Mexico game in Dallas I think (I was actually at the grounds for that one so I didn't see it on TV).
Comcast Sports and INHD have been doing something similar to this for DC United games last year. I think the near term scenario will continue to look like this with channels that have the majority of their content available only in SD not actually going to a full-time HD channel but licensing rights to some of their content to partners like HDNet, INHD, and WorldSportHD.
